News ImageNovember 17, 2018  Thanksgiving Safety Tips for PetsIt's almost time for Thanksgiving! Don't forget about your four-legged family members while you celebrate with your two-legged ones! Here's a few Thanksgiving safety tips to keep your pets healthy and happy during the holiday.

FOOD:
Many Thanksgiving feast staples are toxic to pets. Turkey and turkey skin, onions, raisins, grapes, chocolate, artificial sweetener (xylitol), yeast dough, and particularly fatty foods are toxic to dogs and cats, and can cause potentially fatal health conditions. Keep furry friends away from the table!

PARTIES AND GUESTS:
If you know your pet gets anxious or over-excited around guests, consider keeping them in a separate room with food, water, and their favorite toy for the duration of the party. Even if your pet is comfortable with guests, make sure you watch the exits as doors open and close. Your furry friend might try to bolt while the front door is open as you greet your guests!

TRAVEL:
If your holiday plans involve traveling elsewhere for multiple days, make sure you'v e made proper accommodations for your pet. Consider boarding them at a pet hotel/boarding house, or hiring a trusted friend to feed and spend time with your pet everyday while you're gone.

News ImageNovember 16, 2018  Cherish Receives Her Halo! While we love every dog here and think they are all incredibly special, sometimes certain pups just stand out and really find a special place in our hearts. Cherish is one of those dogs!

Cherish is a grey Pit Bull who has been with us at OC Animal Care since July of this year. She’s 3 years old and one of the sweetest animals you’ll ever meet. She’s also diabetic and blind. She spends her time cozy and loved in our Shelter Director’s office, and is a favorite furry friend of just about all staff and volunteers.

This week, her ability to take on the world has been even more improved by an amazing product called Muffin’s Halo for Blind Dogs. It was donated by Dress Guido and Second Chances for Blind Dogs, and will be donated again by us at OCAC to her forever home, when she finds it. The Halo helps her be more mobile, without fear of bumping into things with her head. We can already tell that she is more confident while walking around, and has totally gotten the hang of how the Halo works!
We’re so happy for Cherish, and so grateful to Dress Guido and Second Chances for Blind Dogs for their gift. Come and visit Cherish at OC Animal Care and see her in action for yourself!

News ImageNovember 8, 2018  Dogs Playing for Life at OC Animal CareCheck out these happy faces! We are so excited and grateful that our new Director Mike Kaviani is also a Dog’s Playing for Life expert! For the last few days our shelter dogs have enjoyed meeting new pups, going for dips in the pool and just plain having TONS of fun. Playgroups have been proven to reduce stress and help give caregivers and potential adopters accurate assessments leading to happier dogs. We will continue to hold daily playgroups so don’t forget to look for the wagging tails during your next visit! For more info please visit dogsplayingforlife.com

News ImageNovember 6, 2018  125 Shelter Pets find Homes at Fall in Love Event! This past weekend, OC Animal Care hosted Fall in Love, a free adoption event with the goal of helping more animals find their forever homes by reducing the cost of adopting. We saw hundreds of interested community members over the weekend and were so grateful to meet with so many enthusiastic adopters-to-be. The event was made even more special by the presence of OC Public Libraries, who offered book recommendations for new pet owners and distributed library cards, and the Pet Adoption Center of Orange County, who provided a wealth of information about their services and helped inform guests about what kind of pet might be right for them.

Overall, 94 cats, 28 dogs, 2 rabbits, and 1 exotic were adopted over the Fall in Love weekend, making a grand total of 125 adoptions! We are absolutely ecstatic to have found homes for so many animals. We would like to thank everyone who made this event’s success possible, and extend our best wishes to all the new forever families!
