@ the Library
National Library Week, April 9-15, 2000,
is a time to "Read! Learn!Connect! @ the Library"
and celebrate all that libraries have to offer.
"The library has always been, and will continue to
be, a one-stop-shop for all your information needs,"
says Dani Porter, Community Relations Coordinator for
the Orange County Public Library (OCPL). "Whether
you're checking out the latest bestseller, browsing your
favorite Web site or attending a program, the library
has both the resources and staff to help you find what
you are looking for."
This year, OCPL will kick off National Library Week on
Saturday, April 8, with a young author book signing, which
will include the 15 winners of the 1999 OCPL/Irvine Barclay
Theatre's "Adventures in Writing" Short Story
Contest. The event, to be held at Borders South Coast
Plaza,3333 Bear Street, will begin at 11:00 a.m.
Also on April 8, at 2:30 p.m., the public is invited to
come and celebrate the expansion of the Brea Branch Library.
The event will feature library tours and the first puppet
show in the new Sunshine Puppet Theatre. Speakers will
include Orange County Third District Supervisor Todd Spitzer,
and Brea Mayor Bev Perry. Several branch events highlighting
library programs and services available to children, their
families, and the community are also scheduled for National
Library Week:
On Thursday, April 13, at 3:00 p.m., the
Costa Mesa Library will have a demonstration
of traditional Mexican costumes, presented
by Genevieve Barrios Southgate, the Bowers
Kidseum Education Director. The library is
located at 1855 Park Avenue at 19th Street.
On Tuesday, April 11, at 7:00 p.m., the
Dana Point Library will present an evening
of stories and magic with the lively Debra
Weller, and all ages are invited to the performance.
The Dana Point Library is at 33841 Niguel
Road at PCH.
The La Habra Library is hosting a National
Library Week Open House on Thursday, April
13, 3:00-5:00 p.m., which will showcase the
library's new computers and databases. The
La Habra Library is located at 221 East La
Habra Boulevard at Euclid.
On Monday, April 10, from noon to 6:00 p.m.,
patrons of the Los Alamitos/Rossmoor Library
are in for a real treat when Phil Yeh, cartoonist
and literacy advocate, will design and create
a special mural at the library. Children of
all ages are invited to come and help paint
the mural. The library is at 12700 Montecito
Road, at Seal Beach Boulevard and St. Cloud.
The Mesa Verde Branch Library in Costa Mesa
will offer "Moondust & Magic"
on Thursday, April 13, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Master
storyteller Poli Rizco will offer an unforgettable
interactive experience for all school-age
kids. The library is located at 2969 Mesa
Verde Drive at Baker Street.
The Aliso Viejo Library will have a Harry
Potter magic show on Tuesday, April 11, at
7:00 p.m. All Muggles age 3 1/2 and up are
welcome. The library is located at 1 Journey
at Pacific Park.
"National Library Week is a great time to see what's
new at your local library and to get a library card if
you don't have one," adds Porter. "We encourage
everyone in the county to come check us out." For
