County to Begin Redistricting
Process, Meeting Set for December 20
The Countys Redistricting Committee
will meet next week to kick-off the process of redrawing
boundaries of the five Supervisorial Districts from Census
data to be released in April.
The group will meet at 2 p.m., Dec. 20, in the Board hearing
room located on the first floor of the Hall of Administration,
10 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana.
The Board of Supervisors established the Redistricting
Committee on Oct. 24 to guide the redistricting process
and develop recommendations utilizing the 2000 Census.
The current districts were established in 1991 utilizing
1990 Census data.
The County is very interested in soliciting public
involvement in the redistricting process, said Chuck
Smith, First District Supervisor and Chairman of the Board.
The Supervisorial districts that will be created
using the 2000 Census data will be based in large measure
on public input."
The committee is composed of representatives from each
Supervisorial District and staff members from the CEO,
County Counsel and the Clerk of the Board.
The members include committee chairman James Campbell
of the First District; vice chairman Paul Hernandez of
the Third District; Nina Hull, Second District; Dean Olsen,
Fourth District and Holly Veale, Fifth District.
Alternate members representing the Board are Barbara Brown,
First District; Steve Franks, Second District; George
Cardenas, Third District; Tom Coad, Fourth District; and
Kay Cotton, Fifth District.
Upcoming Redistricting Committee meetings are set for
2 p.m., Jan. 17 and Feb. 21.
