OC Public Library Receives $56,000 Gates Foundation Grant

The Orange County Public Library system has received a $56,000 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to provide funds for the expansion of public access to computers and the Internet.

According to County Librarian John Adams, "This funding moves us one step closer to our goal of providing accessible information in all formats to all communities served, and will provide a stronger base on which to continue to build and enhance our library services."

The grant is part of over $11 million the Gates Foundation earmarked for public libraries and their branches in California that serve communities at or above the 10 percent poverty level, as determined by the 1990 census.

Dr. Kevin Starr, California State Librarian said, "Our goal is to ensure that information of all kinds is readily available to all of California's citizens. This wonderful gift from Bill and Melinda Gates will make certain that no Californian finds himself or herself on the wrong side of the digital divide. Not since Andrew Carnegie has there been such a dramatic intervention by the private sector into public library development."

The funding received by OCPL will go towards 22 computers and four printers.
