Governor Appoints
OC Chief Probation Officer to California Board of Corrections
SANTA ANA – Orange
County’s Chief Probation Officer, John B. Robinson,
has been appointed to the state Board of Corrections by
Governor Gray Davis.
The appointment was effective March 15, but requires confirmation
by the state Senate. Ten of the Board’s 13 members
are appointed by the governor, while the remaining three
are set by state statute. Members do not receive a salary.
Mr. Robinson, 49, has worked for the Orange County Probation
Department for 27 years in a wide variety of positions.
He served as a Chief Deputy Probation Officer for 11 years
until he was named as Chief Probation Officer last November,
replacing long-time Chief Probation Officer Michael Schumacher.
An Anaheim resident, Mr. Robinson is a member of the Chief
Probation Officers of California (CPOC) and the California
Peace Officer Association (CPOA). He is a graduate of
California State University, Fullerton.
Established in 1944, the California Board of Corrections
works with city and county officials to maintain statewide
standards for the construction and operation of local
jails, juvenile halls, and camps for juvenile offenders.
The Board also maintains standards for hiring and training
the staff who work in those detention facilities and elsewhere
in local corrections and probation.
In addition, the Board of Corrections disburses training
funds to criminal justice agencies, conducts special studies
on public safety statewide, and administers grant funds
for jail and juvenile detention construction projects
and juvenile delinquency programming. The Board meets
every other month.
