College Scholarships
Available From Supervisor For Community Volunteers
(Santa Ana) The deadline
is March 31 for the Cynthia Coad Community Service Scholarship.
Students from the sixth grade through community college
are eligible for awards ranging from $250 - $1,500
in recognition of their volunteer work.
"As an educator, I am acutely aware of the need for
our young people to continue their educations after high
school. That's the primary reason my husband and I wanted
to fund a scholarship program," said Fourth District
Supervisor Cynthia Coad. "I tied the scholarship
to community service because it is a value that I hold
and because it's an activity that's available to everyone
in the community. Whether it's through church, school,
hospital, community center or other, there are many volunteer
needs to be filled in the community and those create opportunities
for service."
Applications may be picked up and should be returned at
the following locations:
El Modena Community Center
Santiago Charter Middle School
El Modena High School
La Colonia Community Center
Each application must be accompanied by two recommendations
from persons such as teachers, work supervisors or community
service agencies. Award winners will be announced by May
Scholarship amounts are determined by the length and quality
of the applicant's volunteerism. Awards for winners who
have not yet graduated from high school will be held in
a trust fund where they will accumulate until the scholarship
recipient provides proof of enrollment in an accredited
trade school, college or university. The scholarship committee
maintains ongoing contact with recipients as they progress
through high school and encourages repeat applications.
"It's possible for a young person who is active in
the community to accrue several thousand dollars toward
a higher education through this program," said Coad.
"My husband Tom and I are thrilled to help young
people improve their futures by increasing their educations.
Because of this program, youngsters can now think of college
in terms of when, not if."
The Coads began the scholarship program eight years ago
with an investment of their personal funds. Since that
time 47 awards have been made totaling $50,000. Former
scholarship winners are currently enrolled at schools
including the University of California, Los Angeles; California
State University, Fullerton; and Stanford University.
