Flood Control District
To Become Historic Landmark
(SANTA ANA)
Founded in 1927, the Orange County Flood Control District
(OCFCD) will soon join Newport Harbor, Mission San Juan
Capistrano and the Tustin Blimp Hangers as a California
Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. The OCFCD is only
the seventh landmark to be dedicated in Orange County.
The national president of the American Society of Civil
Engineers (ASCE), Robert Bein, will present the OCFCD
with a brass plaque commemorating the designation in a
ceremony at 9:30 a.m., March 1 in the H.G. Osborne Building,
300 North Flower Street, Santa Ana.
The ceremony will feature a brief history of the OCFCD
and an explanation of the Historic Landmark Program. Cynthia
P. Coad, Chair, Orange County Board of Supervisors, will
discuss the importance of the flood control district,
and Vicki Wilson, Director of the Public Facilities and
Resources Department, will talk about challenges facing
the program.
"This is an incredible honor," said Coad. "I
believe that many lives and properties have been preserved
as a result of the Flood Control District and its engineers."
The ASCE landmark program was developed to bring recognition
to historic civil engineering projects, structures and
sites. It honors special projects that are at least 50
years old and have made significant contributions to the
development of the nation or a large region and the civil
engineering profession.
According to Theodore von Karman, scientists study the
world as it is; engineers create the world that never
has been. The Flood Control District has helped
transform Orange County from a land of orange groves to
an area in which many people and businesses want to locate,"
said Coad.
