(SANTA ANA) – County volunteers
are priceless and ageless. In 2001, volunteers collectively
logged close to 925,000 service hours valued at $28 million.
Ranging in age from 15 to 93 years-old, the oldest and
youngest honorees are represented among the 40 volunteer
individuals and six groups selected for special recognition
by the Board of Supervisors.
The sixth annual countywide Volunteer Recognition Ceremony
is set for 8:30 a.m., April 17 in the Board Hearing Room
on the first floor of the Hall of Administration (HOA),
10 Civic Center Plaza in Santa Ana. A pre-awards reception
begins at 7:45 a.m. in the HOA first floor lobby.
The Orange County Board of Supervisors will convene in
special session to present recognition awards to honorees
for partnering with the County in providing service to
the community.
Senior honoree Antonio “Tone” Correa, is a 93-year-old
volunteer with READ/Orange County. He has contributed
more than 1,400 service hours since joining the program
in 1996. Correa provided literacy assistance to adults
to enhance reading skills needed to become U.S. citizens.
He also helped limited-English high school students earn
high school equivalency diplomas.
The youngest honoree this year is Arthur To, a community-minded
15-year-old high school student. He helped the OC Public
Library create a New Employee Orientation welcome video
and contributed technical expertise and creativity in
filming, editing, graphics and sound.
“County government is charged with providing many
services that range from law enforcement, inoculations
against disease, mental health services and code enforcement,”
said Michael Schumacher, CEO. “Volunteers help us
extend those services.
“These dedicated individuals tend babies in the Orangewood
nursery, act as mentors to troubled youth, provide literacy
assistance and even team with our Sheriff’s Department
personnel for search and rescue,” said Schumacher.
“The hours they contribute are far more significant
than the dollar figure we attach to them. We’re all
very grateful for their service.”
The County’s 21,000 volunteers – including community
volunteers, student interns, Park Ranger and Sheriff reserves
– collectively logged close to 925,000 service hours
valued at $28 million during 2001. The volunteer student
interns and reserves represent 13 County agencies, departments
and four external groups.
