Internship Position Description

Accounting/Cost, Revenue & Budget Intern - Auditor-Controller's Office   (unpaid internship)

Functions of Agency/Department:

The Cost, Revenue and Budget unit is a section within the Central Accounting Operations division of the Auditor-Controller’s office. The unit interacts extensively with other divisions of the Auditor’s office as well as other County departments and State agencies. The focus of the Cost function is to assist departments in maximizing revenues through recovery of County indirect costs. The Budget function focuses on the preparation of the line item budget required by the State Controller’s office. Additionally, the Cost, Revenue and Budget area prepares quarterly Sales and Use Tax reports, remits Sales and Use Tax payments to the State Franchise Tax Board and researches vendor invoices for payment of California sales tax. 
Intern Duties/Responsibilities:

Interns will assist in the preparation of the County Wide Cost Allocation Plan (CWCAP), County Budget Book and various projects, including reviewing, compiling and formatting supporting documents. In addition, Interns will assist in posting and reviewing parking and equipment violation receipts received from jurisdictions throughout Orange County and Out of State vendor invoices.

The internship provides practical experience in applying accounting principles and policies and learning the special regulations and procedures applicable to governmental accounting in California. Interns will prepare journal entries and assist in the preparation of a variety of analytical accounting, statistical and narrative reports. 

Educational Requirements:

The internship is best suited for college students or recent graduates who have completed several accounting courses with an accredited college or university.

Skills, Training or Qualifications:

This department is seeking students or recent graduates who express a sincere interest in a career in the accounting division of a large governmental agency. This position is best suited for applicants with a business background or other related fields, with a concentration in accounting. Previous office experience and experience with Microsoft Office Suite and a calculator are preferred.

Time Commitment:

Minimum 15 hours per week for 3 or more months.  Hours must be scheduled during normal business hours (Monday - Friday between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.).  Applicants able to schedule the maximum hours listed for the internship typically gain a more in-depth experience.
