Functions of Agency/Department:
The Orange County Sheriff-Coroner’s Department is a modern, progressive law enforcement agency dedicated to protecting the peace and enhancing the quality of life for everyone in the County of Orange. The Department provides primary police services to 700,000 residents of 12 cities, the unincorporated areas of Orange County, as well as security for John Wayne Airport, harbors and coastline, public transportation, and courts.
The Support Services Division is responsible for the following primary functions:
Information Technology - Responsible for the IT-related activity for approximately 4,000 employees and more than 320 law enforcement applications.
Records - Maintains all departmental records and manages warrants, subpoenas and teletype operations on a 24/7 basis.
Property and Evidence - Responsible for the legal intake, storage and disposal of more than 160,000 items, including narcotics, weapons, cash and DNA.
Intern Duties/Responsibilities:
Interns may provide staff support with the following projects:
Set up and maintenance of computers and peripherals
Assistance with application development and Data Center operations
Assistance with organization of warehouse facility
Educational Requirements:
Internship is best suited for senior- or graduate-level students or recent graduates with computer science and/or IT backgrounds with specialties in hardware related to desktops, servers and networking and developers in Microsoft languages in .NET.
Skills, Training or Qualifications:
Ideal candidates must have programming knowledge in Microsoft languages, including VB, C#, C++, and Web Dev. Legacy applications are used in older versions, but all new development is done in the current MS languages. Knowledge of and experience in SQL is a plus.
Time Commitment:
Minimum 12 - 15 hours per week for 6 months. Hours must be scheduled in 3- to 8-hour blocks of time during regular business hours (Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.). Applicants able to schedule the maximum hours/duration listed for this internship typically gain a more in-depth experience.

Required Background Investigation:
Background investigations that can take two – three months to process will be conducted on applicants who have successfully interviewed for the internship and wish to pursue placement.
The background investigation includes a 20 - 30-minute pre-screen interview. The pre-screen interview for out-of-state applicants can be conducted by phone. An additional three-hour in-person interview and Livescan fingerprinting are also required. Location for pre-screen and in-person background interviews:

As part of the background investigation, applicants will be required to provide five references along with original copies of the following documents:
Birth certificate (original or certified copy) or if applicable, naturalization certificate/resident card (Passport is not accepted.)
Valid, state-issued driver’s license or ID
Social Security card
Proof of current automobile liability insurance coverage, listing applicant as an insured driver
Official college transcript(s) (Required for applicants who have completed their degree(s) and must be submitted in a sealed/unopened envelope.)
