With recent wildfires and burn scars, the following are things you can do to protect yourself, your family and your property from the effects of a landslide or debris flow:

  • Prepare for Potential Debris Flows / Landslides: Learn if your area has been previously affected by landslides or debris flow by contacting local officials, state geological surveys or departments of natural resources, or university departments of geology.

If you are in known flood area or your home is identified as “value at risk,” you should act now to protect your home. Review OC Public Works Post-Burn Preparedness webpage for suggested methods on how you protect your home.
  • Make a Plan: Develop emergency plans for your family and business. Make a personal or family evacuation plan so you and/or your family know what to do should evacuations be issued. To learn about how to make a plan, visit ReadyOC.org/make-a-plan.
  • Stay Informed: Follow official government agency webpages/social media and sign up for AlertOC.org to receive detailed alert messages when evacuation warnings or orders are issued. Also, stay informed of the local weather forecast and be aware of when heavy rain is predicted.
  • Be ready to go: When evacuations warnings or orders are issued, act immediately. Don’t wait. Move to high ground away from any affected areas. If a landslide is approaching you, run for the nearest shelter and take cover.
